Global Developer Salary Comparison in 2025

If you’re a developer—or planning to become one—you might be wondering how much coders earn across the globe. Thanks to the latest Stack Overflow Developer Survey , we now have a clearer picture. The chart in this post highlights annual compensation (including salary, bonuses, and perks) for full-time professional developers in different countries, in USD before taxes and deductions.

How the Data Was Collected

The survey focused exclusively on full-time developers, leaving out freelancers, students, and part-time workers. Each country’s salary distribution is represented with a box plot, showing the 25th to 75th percentile, and a line indicating the median salary. The number of respondents from each country is noted in parentheses.

Who’s Earning the Most?

Let’s cut to the chase—developers in the United States (970 respondents) come out on top, with a median salary of around $140,000 and some reaching as high as $180,000. Right behind are Switzerland (464) and Luxembourg (131), where median compensation comfortably exceeds $100,000. Other high-paying countries include Israel, Australia, Denmark, and Germany, where median salaries fall between $80,000 and $100,000.

Europe: Strong and Steady

Europe remains a competitive region for developer pay. Countries like the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, Austria, Belgium, and France report median salaries typically ranging between $50,000 and $80,000. Solid, reliable, and consistent.

Asia: A Mixed Bag

Asian countries show a wide spread in compensation. On the higher end, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea offer salaries approaching $80,000. But on the lower end, countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Indonesia still struggle with median salaries well below $20,000 per year. The talent is certainly there—the pay just hasn’t caught up.

Africa: Early Stage, Big Potential

In Africa, countries such as South Africa, Egypt, Kenya, and Nigeria reflect relatively modest earnings, often under $20,000 annually. As the tech industry grows on the continent, we can expect these numbers to rise in the coming years.

Latin America: On the Rise

Latin American countries like Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina show a developing market with median salaries between $10,000 and $30,000. While these numbers may seem low compared to the US or Europe, the potential for growth is promising.

Final Thoughts

This global snapshot shows just how varied developer compensation can be depending on geography. While the US and parts of Western Europe offer top-tier pay, other regions are still catching up. Whether you’re looking for a job abroad, considering remote work, or just curious about the global tech landscape, this data gives you a valuable perspective.
