Microsoft Word has been around for a long time, but many of us only use a few of its features. Whether you’re a student, a writer, or in business, discovering some of Word’s lesser-known tricks can help you work faster and impress others.

Here are some cool features you might not know about:

The “Hidden” Clipboard

Most folks think copying and pasting is just Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. But Word has a clipboard that can hold up to 24 copied items.
How to use it:
Go to the Home tab and click the small arrow in the Clipboard group to see your clipboard.

Type by Speaking

If you don’t like typing, you can use the Dictate feature to speak your text.
How to use it:
Click the Dictate button in the Home tab (you'll need a mic and Microsoft 365) and start talking.

Recover Unsaved Documents

Closed Word without saving? Don’t worry.
How to recover it:
Go to File, then Info, then Manage Document, and select Recover Unsaved Documents.

Use Wildcards for Searching

Regular search is good, but wildcard search is better. Want to find all four-letter words that start with “b”? Type b???.
How to activate:
Press Ctrl+F, then go to Advanced Find, click “More,” and check “Use wildcards.”

Generate Random Text

Need filler text for something?
Try this:
Type =rand(3,4) and hit Enter for three paragraphs with four sentences each. For lorem ipsum, use =lorem(3,4).

Show the Ruler

If your layout looks messy and you can't see the margins, here's a quick fix.
How to show it:
Go to the View tab and check the box next to Ruler.

Customize AutoCorrect

You can set it up to automatically change shortcuts into full phrases.
Example:
Type “/sig,” and Word can turn it into your full email signature.
How:
Go to File, Options, then Proofing, and AutoCorrect Options.

Bonus:Password Protect Your Document

If you want to keep some documents safe, you can add a password.
How to do it:
Go to File, then Info, and click Protect Document, followed by Encrypt with Password.
